Introduction:

The main sources for reference in any genealogical search in Scotland are those of the births, marriages and deaths contained within the Old Parish Registers and Civil Registration records.  However, there are many other sources which contain information about individuals from all walks of life, rich and poor.  The following is a brief summary of those which will be available to me when conducting research on your behalf.

New Register House:

Old Parish Registers 1553-1854 (incomplete)
Civil Registration 1855-date (mostly complete)
Census Records 1841-1901 (incomplete)
Index to Civil Registration for England & Wales 1837-date (mostly complete)
Index to 1881 Census for England & Wales (mostly complete)
Post office, County & Trade directories
Other miscellaneous papers and records, including emigration lists, burgess lists, and military rolls

National Archives of Scotland:
